New State-of-the-art Upright MRI Scanner Technology Launches

MRI Scanners are an essential piece of equipment for health professionals to diagnose conditions such as Cranio-cervical Joint Instability (CCJ) or Chiari Malformation (CM).

While the process to obtain a diagnosis may have previously been long, drawn out and painful for many patients, improvements and innovations in technology have now made it stress-free and simple for doctors and their patients.

Upright MRI of Deerfield is an amazing, forward-thinking company that prides itself on developing the best MRI technology to improve the diagnosis process.

Deerfield’s MRI Innovations

Dr. Fox, the CEO of Deerfield, talked about their newest updates to the Upright MRI Scanner;

“In the past, traditional MRI scanners required patients to lay down flat to be scanned and determine a diagnosis. However, this caused problems because the unnatural position of the head and neck and the lack of pressure when laying down didn’t provide effective indicators of the issue.

The Upright MRI Scanners remove this issue and allow the head and neck to settle naturally, pointing to the areas that are causing the most strain. This simple process, along with our newest code updates and magnetized scanners provide fast and accurate diagnoses, without causing extra pain to the patients.”

What Is CCJ?

Cranio-cervical Joint Instability is a condition where the ligaments which connect the neck to the head become slackened or stretchy. This means that the head is no longer supported as it should be. This condition could be caused by trauma or an accident or could be a congenital issue such as Ehler-Danlos syndrome.

What is CM?

Chiari Malformations are when the brain bulges out of the skull from behind, fusing to the spinal column, and putting pressure on parts of the brain and spine, which could result in physical function loss.

Traditional Vs. Upright MRI Scanners

While traditional scanners proved to be problematic as they exacerbated anxiety and claustrophobia and could even be impossible to use for people with physical disabilities, the Upright MRI Deerfield Scanner of Deerfield aims to make diagnosis more simple, accurate and stress-free for patients and medical professionals.

The very first upright scanner was developed in 1996 to solve these basic issues. Rather than a flatbed which the patient would have to be guided into, the upright scanner allows patients to sit in a chair in the middle of the scanner. This aims to keep the head and neck in a natural position to identify the areas of strain.

Dr. Fox mentions, “The chair setup itself is one of the biggest developments, as it can be adjusted to any height to allow scanning for anyone. The scanner can then focus on the right sections and move around the patient in order to gather the right data to provide the best diagnosis.”

This innovation has removed the stress from the MRI process for the patients, making them feel more in control in the upright position.
